I posted this earlier this morning to my Skillshare students because I was getting a lot of comments and messages from them that they’re discouraged…and to be fair, I woke up this morning with more disappointment and doubt on my mind that anything else! (Yes, even how much I wanted coffee, and that’s saying something! ha!)
I’ve received a bunch of messages & comments lately where doubt or discouragement are kicking in, and your creative business can feel like more of a drain than anything else. I get it, I really, really do! Hey, I felt discouraged just this morning while making coffee! (And approximately a zillion times over the last week alone…scientific numbers! ;))
It’s normal, but it doesn’t have to control you. In fact, it shouldn’t! It’s normal, but you can’t let it make you stop or slow down on your business or creative hobbies.
Entrepreneurship is like gardening, you have to plant a lot of seeds (well, within reason and wisdom) because you know not all will grow, but if you follow a few simple steps, at least some will grow. But you also never get to know exactly how much they’ll produce either. And it all takes time.
Business is very similar. You can’t count on just a few seeds, you also can’t rush the process, all you can do is keep “cultivating” and things may go smoother, and you may produce more in the long run. But it’s still a long game. And it’s worth it, especially if the only way you really like peas is straight off the vine, like me! 😉
This may seem random, but I really felt that y’all may need to hear this today, I know I did! 😉
Just keep swimming guys…this isn’t rainbows and butterflies, but it’s all well worth it in the end!
So often when discouragement and doubt sets in, we stop, we quit, we take a ‘break’…etc. And at the end of the day, it’s the enemy trying to get us exactly that, off track!!
And for years, and years…and years! I let myself get off track! I let those feelings control me and take me even further away from what God has called me to do, and what I want in life! But it doesn’t have to.
You know the saying “feel the fear and do it anyway”. That kinda rings true here. Yes, there’s going to be some things in business (and just in life for that matter) that make us feel doubtful, people disappoint us on the regular, or we feel like we just aren’t getting very far, or at least not very fast, so maybe we should quit. Guess what y’all?! You’re giving the enemy just what he wants!
John 10:10 – A thief comes only to steal and to kill and to destroy. I have come so that they may have life and have it in abundance. (HCSB)
Doubt, discouragement, disappointment, they’re all facts of life…but they’re not from God, they steal from us, they destroy what we’re going after, what God has called us to do! Let’s stop letting him!
When business (or life) gets tough, keep going! Just keep swimming!
I’m not a gardening expert by any means, but I do garden on smaller scales…and I know that sometimes it’s annoying to feel like bugs ate all your kale. Or annoying to wait forever for things to grow. It’s hard to not know exactly how many tomatoes your plants will actually produce. And more, (basically gardenings kinda annoying in general, ha! But bear with me, it’s a good analogy!)
Gardening means diversifying your plants, also planting what you actually like and can use! Why would you plant bell peppers if you hate them?! Also…why would you try to start a Youtube video if you hate doing video?!? Same principle applies! Gardening also means doing a few small things daily. Watering, fertilizing, pruning, weeding…etc. Business is the same way, do a few small things daily, or near daily, and over time that “cultivating” will pay off!! Yes, sometimes a deer will eat those tomatoes you were going to pick tomorrow for a special dinner….theoretically speaking (although yes, this has literally happened to me! #mainelife haha!)
At the end of the day love, you can’t control it all, and you were never, ever meant to! That’s draining! That’s leading to even more doubt and discouragement than normal! Stop trying to!
Surrender your business to our Good, Good Father, and just start Cultivating the small and simple pieces consistently! It works, trust me love!
with love & blessings,
