EVERNOTE – Seriously, I love, love, LOVE Evernote! For a long time I used other apps plus planners, binders, etc. Like a pretty crazy set up. Yet E and I were still constantly running to the store for random little things, important papers got lost, etc. And that wasn’t working well, as you could imagine! Things were allllll over the place! But now I’m completely switched over to Evernote & E is slowly switching with me and almost all of our important documents are on here we save SO much time looking for things and shopping!
Note on how we use it: I’ll do a full post/video on this some point soon but for the most part we just have a tag for each house hold member, @me, @E and @mia (our new puppy!) and take a photo of each document! So simple! So it’s our “filing cabinet” in a sense, and only things we really MUST keep stay in a large accordion folder in a closet in the house. We’re about 80-90% paperless which is awesome! Less time checking & sorting mail too! 😉
Monthly Shopping – Again we use Evernote to keep a monthly “basics” list like coffee (duh!) and staples we eat all the time like beans & rice, TP & paper towels, etc. And then we do a quick inventory of what’s left in our pantry, fridge & freezer. THEN we get started on a quick list of meals we can already make, and sketch out some stuff we’d like to make, maybe some new stuff to try (I don’t really do recipes…mostly just see something cool in a magazine or Pinterest and then just make it up as I go! ha!) Then when I’m at the store I’m doing a huge haul and it’s certainly taking a few hours but I can grab some good sales, some of the “manager special meats” which is usually SUCH good deals! And then just get home unpack it all, probably freeze a lot of it and get the crockpot on rotation! So around 3-4 hours at the start of the month I have my meal prep & shopping roughly 70-80% done. And then I deserve a nap! ha!
And yes…this often involves a rather large & expensive coffee…I deserve it after all that! Plus I’m saving in all honesty about 30-40% on groceries by not running to the store every 3-4 days, so yeah! Well deserved!
Care.com – We haven’t actually pulled the trigger on this but we’re working on it literally as I type this to hire a local college student or high school student to come help us out a little bit. This could mean meal prep during the huge grocery haul time and honestly, that’s #1 for me! That would be such a big help. But we’re also looking for someone that can clean up a little bit for us, maybe walk the dog when we both have long days of meetings or something (really rare, but honestly, we already have so many people “borrowing” Mia for walks we may as well include it since it’ll be happening anyway! ha!) And some errands too when need be. Run out of coffee creamer? Add it to the list for the next time our “family assistant” comes over, plus maybe some laundry and a little meal prep. That can honestly be around $10-20 each week but also a big help…seems really worth it to me, but we’re going to run a “trial” over the next few weeks to find out!
Could this type of thing work for you and your family? Even though our budget is fairly tight right now, we’re trying it by eliminating some other budget items (cancel cable maybe? Switch cell phone plans?) so we can do this trial of a family assistant for about $50-100 each month and see how it helps us out! Less stress would totally be worth it! Why not give it a trial run for just 2 weeks?!
Plus Care.com is much more legit than Craigslist y’all! Also try hiring/bribing family or friends from church maybe? We tried this and all related teenagers turned us down! ha! Even with puppy bribes! Kids these days! 😉 haha!
