I see this a lot with my clients, students and even just a lot of my millennial peers. There seem to be two camps – “follow your passions!” said with massive conviction and “JUST pick one thing already, get a good job with bene-ies and a nice title!” (With a hint of, no matter WHAT – even if you’re super unhappy there…)
There is such an issue with these all or nothing thought patterns! Both take things way too seriously, but I’m specifically going to talk about the passions/purpose/calling factor.
I have coached and taught online about finding your purpose, or calling (basically the same thing, at least in my opinion) and starting & running businesses that don’t run YOU…
Yet after 5+ years of coaching and helping entrepreneurs, I’ve noticed so many are slight control freaks about the whole deal…which ultimately just ends up killing a lot of the growth that could happen.
People want to find their calling in 5 easy steps, and then run a business based on the 10 things they need to do each week, and they’re pretty much golden with a 6 figure business in 6 weeks and rainbows and puppies. Okay yes…I’m being slightly sarcastic here, but it’s still close to what I see all the time.
My advice?! STOP. TAKING. THINGS. SO. DAMN. SERIOUSLY!!
It’s pretty much the only hope here y’all! I love my millennials, we’re literally changing the world with blog posts, apps and some crazy awesome companies! And some of us aren’t even done college yet! However…please take a small chill pill about it all!
The reason we can’t be super controlling and nuts about our callings, our passions, our purposes, and all that jazz, is simply, we don’t have a crystal ball! (And if you do, you should probably ask for your money back 😉 kidding, kinda…)
The best thing to do is the best you can with what you’ve got right now! Your skills and gifts, your purpose and calling, all of that will most likely stay similar over the years, but the way you act on it in each season of your life will definitely change, at least slightly.
For me, I know that the way I run my businesses now, will most likely change when I have little babies & kids running around, and then change again when they’re older and think I’m no longer cool. Ha! 😉
You may now feel called to take the fashion & food blog you’ve had since college full-time, work on bigger collaborations with brands, bring healthy & easy food and effortless style on a budget to the masses of our generation – AWESOME! But in 10 years, you may be doing practically the exact same thing, or something 180 degrees different, but I promise, if you still following the calling, still follow where God wants you, and use your gifts for a great purpose, it may seem like a detour, but it will actually be the best path overall!
Stop taking things so seriously, follow the curiosity, your natural gifts and way you were wired, and just take some action darling! Truly!
