Lent isn’t really something I grew up practicing in my churches, I occasionally joined my friend Em and her family with Lent when we were growing up, but it’s something I haven’t done in probably 10 years at least. But this year, a few weeks into the season, I found God whispering to me one morning, “give up learning, completely, until Lent is done”.
Needless to say I had some excuses, but I just went forward with it anyway.
I didn’t sign up for new webinars my friends & mentors held. No new classes (although now I’ve signed up for Skillshare and am loving it now that Lent is over!)
No new workshops, or conferences, etc. No podcasts even! (Ah! I spent about 2 hours one night making a new running playlist so I had something to listen to!)
I even only read a few blog posts here & there, and only on things I actually needed to know to work on a project at the moment, like answering a tech question.
Instead, I focused on listening to sermons and reading a heap of awesome books, some fiction, but most faith based.
Here’s what happened-
I have headspace for the first time in YEARS! And we’re talking like, 5+yrs. I can now see why my burnout has been SO bad the last few year. Ugh!
I have clarity on so many new upcoming projects! Of course there’s still just a measure of trust and leaping that has to happen, becuase my career path is so nontraditional. But since I wasn’t hearing all these other entrepreneurs talk about what we should do, and what works for them and new things to try. I could just sit with my ideas and the whispers God gave me for new projects, without all the other voices in my head saying stuff like “well, that lady said xyz…”
And to be honest, I’ve been very careful over the last few years to stop following all the “it brand coaches” and those promising nothing but 6figures a year or whatever. I am not a fan of those types of coaches that just hire an expensive coach, learn their “system” and then ask other people to pay them $15k to learn it too, and then so on and so forth. To me, that’s kinda scammy, and even worse than some of the network marketing company practices I’ve seen and I’ve been a member of some NM companies that changed hands and turned into horror stories!
But still, not having outside voices really, really brought clarity and peace that has been SO helpful in actually feeling the freedom to chase what Gods’ given me with much less fear of “will it work?!” or “what will people think?!”
And yes of course I LOVE learning! Hello, I am an “Entrepreneurship Educator” and total teacher at heart, after all! BUT there are totally times when it’s great to go into a period of “fallow” and step back and let your mind settle and quiet. I highly encourage you to try it love! If you do, email me and tell me how it went for you!
with love & blessings,
