Loves…I’m going to be forward and admit this, I don’t always have fantastic relationships with goals, nor have I rocked them well in the past. NOT. At. ALL! So if you’re feeling some of that pressure right now – things like; will this stuff really work? Won’t I just give up half way through again? etc…Darling, you’re not alone!
BUT – the point is, to keep going, step by step until you find something that works, until you’ve passed some blocks (for this I recommend following Dr. Mckyla on Periscope or Katch, she does so much great work in this field, or books by John Eckhardt on the biblical way to do that, yes, it’s a real thing!)
I’ll also be the first to admit, that my process is SUPER messy. And I’ve absolutely embraced that this year! Usually it would be one more negative thing for me to quit and eventually start over again…and repeat! BUT loves, you’re not going to do that this year right?! Literally, only if it’s the last kinda resort and God really gives you that green light, deal?! Deal! 😉
So we’ve already gone over my words last week. Those just came from prayer basically, no real logic or anything.
Next, I usually go through the “what worked well, and what didn’t” process. But this year, for my personal and biz goals I really felt called to integrate my word more in my process…so…
1. Category “Grading”
Normally I even forget about my word (or words) sometimes, just filing them away in my planner and only thinking about it once every 2 months! (Oy vey… lol) So this year – I asked myself – How much am I thriving in this area of my life?
Health – 6 (on a scale of 1-10)
Faith – 7
Marriage – 5
Business – 4 (yes really…more on step 2!)
Finances – 6
Yikes…but not really, I was tough on myself here, but also realized that I’ll probably never give myself a 10 because most things have room, at least in most seasons. So, things look a little lower than they probably are. Step 2!
2. How can I THRIVE here this year?
Health – Barre3 challenge in Jan, and hopefully a second one later in the year. A Stretch (pun intended! ;)) goal of 6 workouts a week. And primarily eating clean proteins, veggies, salads and smoothies. (Y’all, I would choose chicken caesar salad over pretty much anything else any day! And while that may not be the healthiest salad on the block, my version is still fairly clean eats! haha!)
Faith – More consistency, and more mindset/heartset work to get over the things that are holding me back from what God has for me. (Real talk here guys…that is big for me!)
Marriage – More QT (quality time, intentional qt, with no phones/life/biz stuff/etc), improving communication, healing burnout on both of our parts for overall better quality of life + marriage!
Business – Simplifying even more, gaining even more consistency. Getting a better & purposeful hold on my businesses, and making more intentional choices about which project gets energy in each season (possibly even closing some biz’s in 2016…we’ll see!) – And most importantly – changing my relationship (and mindsets) on things related to working. (Sorta lumped in with my faith category)
Finances – We’re actually doing very well considering! However, in order to thrive, we really ned to focus on more organization (and yes, simplifying, my fav word lol!) and then increasing incomes. Thankfully, E’s done his grad program in the spring, and will be getting a job that has FT pay, which is sweet! And as an entrepreneur, I’m always working on goals to grow things, of course! But we also have crazy financials this year, like giving a crazy (to us) amount, buying a 2nd car in cash, buying a house this year, and as the stretchiest of stretch goals – possibly paying off the rest of our student loans this year?! Phew… So we did fairly well in 2015, but the extra organization will help us better manage the extra income, to better plan which sub-category it’s going into. And there’s a lot of moving pieces on this one! 😉
3. The “Goal Ideas”
So the next step, is actually me just filling in the vision God has given me to “trust & thrive” this year – with some more concrete things. I say “goal ideas” because in the past, those would be my “yearly goals” and they would be STONE baby (except NOT like 3 weeks into the year!) I would freak if those got shifted by something that happened, like a big move, or something. (We had a few large “somethings” this year that just shifted everything we wrote down in Jan, and that’s okay, it’s life!)
So in my next post in a few days, I’ll share a sample of my ideas on where I’d like each category to go towards this year, but I know the specifics aren’t important. It’s the goal behind the goal, that’s important!
This is important so I want to hone in on this point – I do NOT do “SMART” goals. In fact, I think they’re pretty terrible for many reasons. One, which I explained somewhat last week, the whole idea of “realistic” is NOT okay for believers of the Bible. Nope. The word “practical” isn’t even in the Bible according to a recent Propel Women article. And I’ve yet to find it in my 20 years of reading it! We’re called to be wise, but also full of faith, that often makes no sense to the human eye or brain. So…why would I follow that antiquated formula for Goals that don’t really have God in them?! Seriously!?
But also because – they go something like this – “I will lose 20 pounds by March 1st 2016.” And then what?! Or something like “I will complete P90x by March 31st 2016.” Great…but then what?! In a way you may have developed a habit, that’s healthy, but in a lot of ways, you’ve just been counting down to a date, and then you finally get to splurge a little, or slow down a little, etc. You get what I mean. For most people, they PUSH until then- and then they kinda float around for a while until they make a new one. I did this for YEARS loves! The up & downs. No thanks, I’m going to pass on that from now on!
The reason I do sometimes vague, and often radical goals, is because A. Faith, and B. It’s more a vision to paint broad strokes with. My grandfather always said “broad strokes may get messy but the barn still gets painted” – yeah. That. Maybe my yearly “goal idea” for my income won’t hit, but if writing it down and looking at it often gives me ideas and action steps to head in that direction, awesome. I think that’s a win, because we’re still moving forward purposefully! And since I’ve got a lot of years of business & income earning ahead of me, I’ll avoid getting uptight about 1 little goal, when I’ve got 50+ more years of them coming! 😉
That’s my 2 cent rant today loves…ha! I hope it blesses you! Next blog post will have my goal ideas, monthly goals & a free download to wrap up this whole process for yourself if you’d like!
with love & blessings,
