This morning I was catching up on some Medium and I came across an article that was talking about a story of a very successful man that made a commitment to himself that he would get up very early every morning, at 5am or something specific, no excuses. One day he had travel delays and only got to sleep about an hour or two before his daily 5am (or whatever it was) alarm went off….
And he made himself get up anyway!
Why? Because he didn’t want to let “excuses” start “seeping into his life”.
Now okay, I hate excuses and victim mentalities. Please recognize those things and tell them to go back to hell where they belong because you’ve got a hope and purpose in God! Hands down love.
HOWEVER….what about your HEALTH?!?!
The #1 thing you should be focusing on: YOUR HEALTH!!
I cannot and will not be quiet about this topic, oh helll no. I will speak up.
“It is health that is real wealth and not pieces of gold and silver.” – Mahatma Gandhi
Waking up early is GREAT – if it works for you mentally and physically. Working a lot of hours at a cute Pottery Barn desk (that I got at Goodwill for $8…cough cough! ;)) is awesome, if it supports your HEALTH too.
Seriously y’all – health is WEALTH. If you work 100 hours a week, stressed to the max and eating like crap, ignoring relationships, sitting 98% of the day and rarely working out. Or a bunch of other bad habits you can come up with off the top of your head…. it’s going to catch up with you love!!
Trust me. Burnout is real!
What happens when you sacrifice sleep for work? You may look & seem REALLY productive for the first few months, maybe even the first year or two depending on your original health status.
But guess what terrible sleep does? Damages your BRAIN! Seriously, look it up!
I recommend looking up Dr Amen’s books and website has a ton of brain scans done on people with a range of bad habits and a range of damage like ADD, depression, etc. It makes prioritizing your health, especially your brain health, really, really sink in!
But my point is – you’re not going to make it very far!
Maybe you’re one of the lucky ones and you can go 2 years of crappy health habits for the sake of your business. Cool…what about your 3rd year in business? Depression, anxiety? Attention and focus issues? Always sick in bed? Possibly even worse medical issues needing hospital time? This isn’t outside of the realm of possible reality love!
How is all that going to affect the business you’ve grown? Probably not positively!
There really is no escaping this love, health really is wealth. Without it we cannot be the super creative, focused entrepreneurs we want and need to be! And we certainly can’t except us to do any justice in the work-life balance department either. (Ask my hubs, he’s seen me be the dumb 100hr weeks entrepreneur before! Wasn’t pretty for our home life!)
This doesn’t have to be a super overwhelming thing either – please don’t let this article become that for you! Just take a few small steps today towards health. And a few more tomorrow!
Maybe go for a walk during your afternoon work break instead of scrolling through Facebook mindlessly? Maybe trade your afternoon latte for a green tea (hello metabolism boost and antioxidants for great skin! 😉 Maybe skip the pizza tonight and have a salad instead? Maybe actually get to bed before 1am tonight! 😉 Find a few things you can try – and make them happen!
Because it will pay off with dividends in the long run allowing you to be a better entrepreneur for years to come, not just 6 figures in your first year and then crash & burn… It will allow you to also be a great wife and mom, daughter, sister & friend. Volunteer…knitter or biker chick, whatever floats your boat!
But sacrificing health in the short term for business building will not go over well in the long term. And I know at least for me, I am a long term creative entrepreneur, always have been, and always will be. So I’m prioritizing my health these days. Because I plan on being a really kick ass business owner, wife, mom (someday in the future) and all the other “hats” – as much as I possibly can! And health is so vital to that.
So what are 2-3 health habits you can implement TODAY?
with love & blessings,
