I’ve been really open in the last few years about my quest to simplify things, in fact I have a whole Skillshare class on my “simple biz” philosophy that was a huge, huge turning point in my business in 2013! I’d actually say that in the online business world I saw the word “simplify” become a super huge buzzword around 2015…and don’t get me wrong, I believe it’s still one of THE most important things we can do for our businesses, our health, our relationships, etc. In fact, I know many, many people who have simplified things massively and found so much healing for depression & anxiety, myself included in that. (This is a great video to watch on that topic by a fellow Mainer too! ha!)
However…there’s one thing I haven’t really talked much about, and I rarely see other people in the minimalism/simplifying world talk about…the dark side of it all…
When you simplify your life to a huge degree, you don’t have a lot of distractions left to run to when problems come up.
This means when issues arise in a relationship or your health or finances, etc, you really can’t deny them as much as you maybe could when you were stressed and could just go clean or tidy things. (Hello college for me…lets clean or re-write my to-do lists like 45 times before I actually get my paper written! ha!)
For me, I realized how much the stuff I had allowed me to be distracted from stressors of life…usually just normal stuff too. Icky feelings I haven’t fully worked through from a bad relationship years ago. Hurts I had from a childhood friend years ago. The anxiety I have about the future, and much more. I have less physical stuff to run to when those things come up.
The other issue that I have really, really noticed in the last year (because we moved into an apartment triple the size we normally live in based on the location being totally worth it…and yet we have gotten rid of TONS more stuff!) is that I run to my phone more often. Instagram has gotten a lot of my distraction time when I didn’t want to deal with something, or when I was tired because I didn’t have a ton of stuff to clean or tidy or “go through” etc.
I’m not saying this as a negative thing to try and talk you out of simplifying things in your life or becoming more minimalistic. I’m saying it to be honest! Truly! Nothing is rainbows and butterflies in life, but being prepared for this when you start a decluttering or simplifying process is just wise. I really didn’t know that all this extra free time would actually end up being a drain on me over the last 18 months or so…I find that the extra time on my phone that was my new “go to” ended up draining me SO much, possibly even more than all my junk!
But now I’m able to put some practices and guidelines in place for myself and it’s helping so much! One huge practice that’s made a big difference for me is just logging out of ALL social media after I use it for intentional reasons! I’m probably only great at this around 70% of the time but it helps me to stay more honest with my usage and actually reminds me to use social media for business more, which is an awesome win-win on my time, my energy, and my business growth!
I highly recommend taking a good look at your life and simplify it to what really matters! It’s game changing! However, definitely be ready for a little bit of “push back” on your habits! But it’s certainly worthwhile!
With love & blessings,
