I noticed a few weeks ago that I was having serious trouble focusing on my work, things I had to do, and even simple things like cooking! And I was probably a grump to be around, because E and I kept having random spats here and there…I was just feeling totally off! And as y’all know, those times just suck right?! Bleck!
I was truly trying to figure out what was at the bottom of it all, I have chronic health issues that have flared up recently, so that and losing sleep due to pain were definite factors. But as I truly thought and prayed over it one night, I realized something…
I hadn’t been very creative lately! And definitely not anything creative just for the sake of it!
Of course I have to be creative in my businesses, and many of my favorite creative hobbies have become elements of my businesses over the years. But lately? I hadn’t been creative really at all, and especially not in a non-results oriented way. Even being creative in a business sense was hard for me, which is just not my normal MO. Just writing or designing graphics was like pulling teeth.
And it really hit me hard, we’re born to be creative! If we believe we’re made in God’s image, and He’s created, well, everything…duh! Creating is a huge part of us! I know this to a point, but I had really forgotten that there’s creativity in each category of my life, and I wasn’t using it well.
Creating in my businesses is a no-brainer, but that become difficult when I’m not creative else-where. For example, in cooking, which is a creative outlet for me that I don’t always tap into, but it’s important to me sometimes. Being creative with our relationships, date nights, gifts, planning tea parties with our kids, a fun girls night out with our friends, etc. All of that counts, and if we don’t really “flex” that creative muscle in each area, at least somewhat often, we literally start to feel “flat” right?
I know I do!
And for each of us, this’ll look different, you may find some categories in your life need pretty much daily creativity, and some need much less. Just maybe 1 special thing every month or so.
For me? I was realizing that although I was being creative in my cooking & health to a point, and of course business, but I hadn’t done anything in a very long time that was creative just for creativity’s sake! And that was really the key.
I put on some loud music (United Pursuit playlist, if you’re wondering,) and dug out my paints and an old canvas I had lying around from a past project, and just got messy. I literally just layered paints on this tiny 8×10 canvas however I felt, but it was awesome. I felt I could finally buckle down and really focus the next day! And I took a few 5 minute work breaks here and there to keep throwing some more paint on the canvas. It really made a difference in how I felt, how I could focus, and just how I could process thoughts! I no longer had that “flat” feeling weighing me down. No, rainbows didn’t magically appear! ha! But it gave me an outlet to use that creative energy that had felt so stuck, and allowed me to better use my energy and creativity in other areas like business. Win-win if you ask me!
But here’s the other point I need to make before I leave you – your calling is a holistic thing.
Using your creativity in your work is of course important, and a big part of your calling. It’s a huge part of what we work on in Confidence and Calling Mastermind. But there’s more too, it’s also in using your creative energies in each season, and each “hat” you have in your life. In motherhood, as a wife, as a friend, as an entrepreneur, but also for yourself too. The things you can do that may never really have an end result, but fuel you. I sometimes use my designs, photos and paintings in business things, but it’s usually a “bonus” after idea, but my primary reason, so I can use it as creative fuel!
Your calling is just as much living each “hat” in your life, and each season of your life well as it is in making a difference through your vocation(s). This is so important to remember – it’s a holistic thing, spanning your whole life. It obviously can shift and change with us as we grow, and sometimes God may through a very big monkey wrench in things and change it up majorly, but, at the end of the day, you don’t clock in and clock out of your calling. Your purpose is just as much in the other areas as well.
I know I covered a lot today, but it’s so important to realize #1 darling, you’re a creative being made in God’s image! How cool is that?! and #2 – Remember, your calling is a holistic thing, it’s a process across our entire lives. So often we just try to hustle towards it, and sometimes that can work, but it won’t work forever. We need to remember it’s a sustainable life we’re looking for, one based on love, making a difference, and living as purposefully as possible for us. We’ll chat about hustle + calling later! 😉
