Posting this today because last week I talked a little bit about how I stopped blogging, and promised to explain more. I’m talking about a touchy subject today, but it’s important. I greatly realized this summer I was “adopting” some lovely mentors “rules” much more than I should have. And blogging was a big part of that. Honestly, I caught myself early on, but still! Bleck! My main thing here is to ask yourself WHY are you acting on something, and make sure it’s purposeful. My summer first brought me to a great learning experience for great reasons, but it soon turned into way too much “square peg – round whole” type of thing because I wasn’t super focused on my WHY’s. This post is really about learning how to avoid that!
This is why I typically discourage the “investment” in big courses or coaching programs. And yes…I know this will ruffle many feathers and get me that awesome “entrepreneurial leaper” badge again! 😉
But please, pretty please, hear me OUT! Read till the end.
Once upon a time, I saved up every extra cent I had as a poor college student and took a big online course that had been raved about for years. It was on my radar for its entire existence and I knew it would be *THE thing* that would allow me to take my businesses to the next level and make me a REAL entrepreneur!
Oh boy…see the mindset issue there?
I see this a lot actually. Almost all of us struggle with this at one point or another.
I really wanted, and thought, that this would be IT for me. It would truly push me to that level I wanted to be at (re: at least 50k a year before I even left college, or something similar to that, can’t remember my exact goal.) It was marketed as *the* best thing ever (pretty much how every entre friend of mine was telling the tale.)
I get that. Sometimes we DO need to just bite the bullet and invest something major. I absolutely, 100% totally get that. I’ve been an entrepreneur for almost 11 years guys, I get that SO much. But I also get that sometimes what we need to bite the bullet and invest in isn’t actually monetary. Sometimes it’s US. Truly. But that’s kinda another post entirely.
Big leaps are often necessary, like quitting your job so you can finally invest the TIME you need in your business which will finally bring it from low 5 figures to high 5’s or even 6. Seen it happen with my own students!
Maybe your big leap is hiring a VA or PA (personal assistant) so you’ve got some peace in that crazy stressed head of yours and can finally get a little more done, or take a little time off to recharge.
Maybe your big leap IS taking time off! → “A vacation, what is that?!” 😉 ha!
But here’s the thing, taking a big leap doesn’t mean it’ll actually pay off, if it’s not the leap/step/jump God actually wants you to make. If your heart is in the area of “big leap = big shortcut”…think again darling! But that’s where all too many of us sit sometimes.
Here’s why I LOVE the “small tweaks” mindset 98% of the time…
Note: I’m NOT saying big leaps, big courses, high investment coaching is WRONG. Please re-read part 1. I’m also not saying I’ll never offer it. I’m saying it has it’s place, but not always where we think it does or should. Keep reading love.
Small tweaks are essential. Essential!!
Small tweaks can mean many things to each entrepreneurs’ journey. For me, sometimes it means just ordering a book cover on Fiverr for $5 instead of spending 30 minutes to make it myself.
Small tweaks can mean taking a small class or webinar, 1 off coaching session, etc. To push past one small issue. Sometimes for me this is just taking a $50 class to learn a fresh perspective on something, like maybe copy writing, or outsourcing smartly. That extra wisdom & stimulus allows me to take a fresh look at what I’m currently doing in that area, and how I can improve it using what I’ve learned, and the other ideas that class sparked. (‘Cuz you know I’m an idea/ADD machine! ha!)
Small tweaks have a massive domino effect when you’re putting some elbow grease and heart behind them. (re-read that please.)
Small tweaks have actually been what has transformed my business to doing something I hated but that made me decent money and was what I was “supposed” to do as a “proper” online entrepreneur (not a leper, as I’ve been told after paying a coach $1000 to tell me that. Nice lady she was. lol) Into something that I actually LOVE. That’s my actual CALLING. Not a carbon copy of someone else’s kinda sorta. (tweet that, that’s good stuff right there! 😉
Small tweaks for me have often been taking smaller classes from coaches and educators, or even just reading a book with seriousness (aka highlighters and notebook in hand, with a BLOCK of time on my calendar to implement!)
The thing with small tweaks is that it’s just a few things to implement, and in order to do that you’ve often gotta look at what’s currently working and what’s not. Then you need to do some heart/gut/prayer work to see where these few takeaways from a “small tweak” book/class/mini-course/workbook goes in your life or business.
But darling, that’s where the magic happens!!
The magic absolutely, 100%, hands down, happens when you tap into YOU. When you do you. When you bring God into the mix (or whatever you believe spiritually, rock it.)
The magic happens when you apply some awesome things you’ve learned to what’s already working for YOU.
With what YOU want. With YOUR vision.
Not spending $2k to adopt someone else’s vision/calling/rules into your life.
Repeated because it needs to be: DO NOT “adopt” something you learn as YOUR way. Take YOU, and figure out where these things you’ve learned can go in the grand scheme of things to perhaps “plug holes” in your current system or knowledge, etc.
Big leaps often mean adopting someone else’s ways and WHYs. Small tweaks kinda force you to go with your gut and implement here and there as you need it.
And NO, I’m not saying you can’t do that with BIG investment programs/etc. Yes, sometimes they are necessary. But often (because I’ve been working with other entrepreneurs for over half of my own entrepreneurial journey.) We invest so big we want to make sure we make it 100% “worth it” so we adopt 100% of the rules & shoulds. Which is not wise. Not always, but often, so take that into consideration.
So that’s why I believe in small tweaks 90% of the time. It counts for pretty much everything in business as well. Outsourcing in small tweak ways (tiny amounts of time here and there, instead of justing hiring a VA for 40 hours a month straight away, etc.)
That’s why my shop items are fairly bite sized and inexpensive. It’s all about making small tweaks as you go so you continue to do what’s best for you, you check in with your gut, you take a moment to stop and look at what’s working and what’s not, and then find a class/webinar/book/workbook/etc to fill in the blanks, not completely TAKE OVER your whole system.
At the end of the day:
- Do YOU – not what you “should” do, what people tell you to do, what people expect of you, formulas, etc.
- Ask yourself WHY you’re doing what you’re doing. I don’t care what you do, I care why you do it. Are investing in something because it *should* be a quick fix and fix all your current problems? Nope. Go back to the drawing board love!
If you want to invest in something big, by all means, consider it. Pray on it. Ask around. Ask yourself WHY in super big detail, get messy and heartfelt with yourself on it!
Do the same even for a $10 book or $20 webinar! Truly. Ask WHY, get deep in your gut, get honest with yourself.
Sometimes that’s the biggest investment we can make in ourselves, and it’s FREE, it’s just HARD y’all! It’s messy, it isn’t pretty. But it can save you from getting thousands of dollars in the hole and needing to dig yourself OUT of it by doing the only thing that really works, the tough, nitty gritty heart work.
Believe me. My poor business card is still recovering from my years of “investing” for bad reasons and short cuts and “shoulds”. But now that I’m doing the deep heart work (I consider my prayer time, hands down business hours. Even billable hours in a way, since God is the CEO of my biz, another post, another day ;))
So please don’t get me wrong, I believe in education, that’s the entire point of my business guys! My husband is a high school educator, I believe in education! Hands down. But I believe in it only if you’re going at it in the right way, and in the right mindset, that’s when it’ll create a massive, possibly even supernatural domino effect!
Practice safe & smart entrepreneurship: Check your investments with your heart, gut and God before getting into something that may just cost you more than just money! 😉 ha!
(Believe me here, wrong investments, whether $10 or $10,000, make you lose yourself and the YOU in your business! You don’t stand out anymore, you lose income, you feel crappy about it, etc. It’s a bad cycle.)
I hope & pray you’ll let this post be a challenge to you to not consider what you should invest in next, or do next, but ultimately WHY you’re thinking about those things. It’s down right essential love!
with love & blessings,
