Goal setting…couples style! So messy, yet SO amazing! <3
Hence why it’s taken over 2 weeks to finalize this whole series! My list of goals will be up on the blog Monday, but for today, I’m offering a few steps to consider as you set your goals, or perhaps to just use as a filter to see your goals you’ve already written!
1. Get RADICAL + theme/word(s)
Next is a little odd for goal setting tips…however, I don’t think it can be ignored!
The graphic above was inspired by a conversation Ethan & I had over Christmas vacation while we were on our various long & snowy drives across Maine to see family & friends.
I don’t want to set “SMART” goals as most “experts” suggest. Realistic makes me want to barf to be honest. I think realistic tends to put people at a point where they don’t even really dream much, or need to have faith to get anywhere!
What’s the point of writing out goals if it isn’t increasing your faith in God, yourself, and others?!
Once we started chatting about radical versus being realistic or just plain ridiculous, we started to brainstorm the vision for the year.
We also talked a lot about our theme for the year.
Our theme as a couple + family is rebuilding.
We SO need that this year, it’s the true north that all of our goals are pointing towards!
I also chose two words for the year after having some seriously OFF days at the start of the year! Ew…guys I was so sick from a cold, then a stomach bug, then an ovary cyst that knocked me off my game for days…however the good thing is that it had me in a deep think + pray mode since I couldn’t do much else.
So…from that came my words…
Discipline + Joy
I really, really need the learn to love being more disciplined in what I do. To a point where it’s not about rules & “shoulds” though. That’s even more important!
But I also want JOY this year. I think they really do go hand in hand to balance out my hilarious/ADD side and my super serious & emotional/overthinking side!
Plus it leads into my topic of breadth & depth from the other day.
There will be many times this year when I need to focus on breadth, like in doing a lot of reaching out to grow my audience, offering fun freebies, etc. And in times in my personal life when we’re traveling or adventuring with family & friends, etc.
Then there will also be plenty of times when depth has to be the focus. Like times in business when I have to dig deep with 1-on-1 clients, or small group programs. Or times when E & I need a weekend away to unplug and have true QT despite our crazy lives! Or times when one of my people needs a 4 hour coffee date instead of a huge dinner party with all of us.
I’m down with both, because they’re both insanely important parts of my life, my business and just who I am in general (ADD + serious thinker ha!)
2. Vision for the year + Pinterest Board
I have been OBSESSED with my 2015 Pinterest board!
I look at it every morning as I go through my morning routine of prayer, goals and planning my day!
I really, really worked on this to be a true reflection both outwardly, and inwardly of what I want this year to look & feel like.
I truly recommend you do a Pinterest board too! I even print it out and add it to the front of my biz binder when I feel I’m mostly done with it! (Of course you can do a traditional one too, or if you’re a writer maybe do a “letter to myself” type of vision?!)
3. Work on breaking it down into Q1 goals, but keep them radical!!
Lastly, I wrote & rewrote goals for the next 90 days (or until the end of March) countless times until I truly felt they were polished. NOT perfect…but truly as purposeful as they can be for the time being!
I really cannot do full yearly goals, or ever 6 month goals. I just feel way to overwhelmed by them, and SO much can happen in a year! I am not under any illusions that I’m in control of a ton of stuff and can rock yearly goals…I can’t. Believe me I’ve tried, and failed, many times!
Quarterly goals allow me just enough longevity to feel like I’m gaining traction even from the tiniest of daily/weekly habits, but also short enough that I can still feel like it’s somewhat of a sprint. I thrive under pressure so that’s important!
I’ll be sharing my finalized goals on Monday, so stayed tuned!
However, your action step(s) today are to think on your Quarterly goals. Feel free to share some on social media & tag me! I’d love to see!
